Beautiful Yet Athletic (Rachel Anne Daquis of FEU)

Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 5:11 AM

This is the first time that i will post about a Athlete/Person.
This is about the Rachel Anne Daquis of FEU Womens Volleyball.

FEU's Rachel Ann Daquis: Holding her head up high

When she enters the volleyball court, the fans scream in unison.

FEU cheering squad’s drums beat a rhythmic and hypnotic beat seeming there to welcome the volleyball goddess. As she graces her followers with her presence, they are at awe. Many are amazed that a woman of her caliber is equaled only by her volleyball talent. With the frenzy, one thing was for sure, Rachel Anne Daquis, the business management and “volleyball goddess” of FEU, was in the building.

As the buzzer sounded on the FEU - Lasalle game 3 of the Season 71 UAAP Finals, The La Salle fans were celebrating, but one player was without a doubt hurt the most. Rachel Anne Daquis, also playing her last game with the Morayta-based squad, finished with 11 points in a losing cause.

Watching the game as the sea of green was jumping in joy, so much disappointment could be felt to the FEU fans. I heard a fan say in disgust, “No more back-to-back, we can try again next year.

A lot of questions loom. Why wasn't Rachel Ann Daquis on the court in the final minutes of the fourth set? Why was she on the bench sitting where all she could do is to keep her fingers crossed?

Where did FEU go wrong? In Game 2, everything looked all roses early as Rachel Anne Daquis scored 22 points there while Mecaila Morada added 19 for the Lady Tamaraws but unfortunately sputtered after winning the first set. Even though FEU lost, Rachel was there fighting. What I couldn’t comprehend is that why, off all games, was she on the bench on the last few minutes where the FEU volleyball goddess could have done something.

No FEU fan could forget FEU Lady Tam’s Game 1 victory over La Salle. Rachel Ann Daquis came up with 20 points, while Shaira Gonzales had 17 for the Lady Tamaraws. Game 1 was a huge game as the Lady Tamaraws then moved within one victory of clinching a record 30th overall title. FEU could literally smell the title as it was nearly within their grasp.

It seemed very simple to me, let Rachel Ann Daquis score 20 points and FEU could win. Of course, other players have to step up as well but you know what I mean, she must lead the way to victory. But how could FEU win with her on the bench? What was FEU sophomore coach Nestor Pamilar and asst. coach Jeremy Flo Pedregosa thinking? Its really something to think about as the next season looms.

Aside from being stunning, Rachel Ann Daquis is also street smart and cerebral when she needs to be on and off the court. Daquis, however, breaks the stereotype of the college athlete as a bonehead

"Ang akala nila sa athletes, walang utak," she said. "Hindi nila alam pinaghihirapan din naming ang nakukuha naming incentives sa school. Minsan kasi as athletes nahihirapan din kami, napapagod. Paminsan pagkatapos ng training ang gusto ko eh ang matulog na lang. Pag higa ko, hindi ko na kaya tumayo. Sobrang hirap ng training namin. Minsan pag hindi ko na kaya pumasok, kakausapin ko professors ko just to let them know (about my situation)."

Even until now, Rachel Ann Daquis is still perceived as masungit o mataray. The volleyball goddess of FEU denied being unapproachable, mataray, because of the way she looks.

"Wala naman nagbago sa akin," she said. "May mga tao kasi na insecure na minsan titignan lang ang hitsura ng tao pero hindi ka naman kilala at magbibigay na sila ng judgment sayo. Ibang-iba ang personalty ko sa hitsura ko. Akala nila mahilig ako sa gimik, sosyalan, pero ang gusto ko lang nagpapatawa at pasayahin mga tao. May pagka-kenkoy din kasi ako."
She is, however, wary of getting too friendly with just anyone, because they might turn out to be stalkers.

"Madaming stalkers," she said. "Nakakatakot sila. During the game, may nagpapaabot ng flowers or may kakausap sakin. Okey lang naman at fans pero sometimes, iba na ang boses nila. But despite that, pinapakita ko pa rin na friendly ako kasi madaming hindi nakakakilala sa 'kin at akala na mataray ako."

I’m sure many of you have seen Rachel Anne Daquis of FEU Women’s Volleyball Team in her attention-grabbing Active White commercial with basketball superstars Chris Tiu and Jai Reyes of Ateneo de Manila. That commercial solidified her as one of UAAP’s prettiest faces.

Rachel Ann Daquis may not have the fairytale ending like Michelle Datuin and Manilla Santos of La Salle experienced in their college UAAP career, but many still look up to her and admire her for what she was able to accomplish during her stay in FEU. Her fans were still electrified by her gameplay, she was without a doubt one of the greatest volleyball players in the country ever to play the game.

What is next for this volleyball goddess? Daquis herself may get international exposure of a slightly different sort.
Her mother is already a citizen of Germany, where she lives in Hanover. And Daquis, along with the rest of family, my soon migrate.

"Actually, hinihintay na kami ng mom ko sa Germany. Ako lang talaga ang gusto mag stay pa dito sa bansa."

She leaves the UAAP on a not so high note but nothing to be ashamed about. She is a fighter and a winner and no one can tell her otherwise.

April Fools’ Day

March 31, 2009, 6:18pm

Although not considered a holiday in its own right, April Fools’ Day (or All Fools’ Day) is celebrated in many countries on April 1. The day-long observance is marked by hoaxes and practical jokes played on gullible individuals who may come from among the members of one’s family, circle of friends, neighbors, or even those with whom one has incurred enmity.

The origin of April Fools’ Day is not clear. There are varying accounts as to how it began. One version has it that it was first celebrated soon after the adoption of the Gregorian Calendar and the term "April Fool" referred to someone who still adhered to the Julian Calendar that it replaced. Another account has it that in pre-Christian cultures, May Day (May 1) was celebrated as the first day of summer that signaled the beginning of the spring planting season, and an April Fool was someone who celebrated the season prematurely – in April. Still another source, which is based on an English newspaper article published on April 13, 1789, traces the origin of April Fools’ Day to the day when Noah sent off a raven too early, before the waters had receded; it is said that the day the raven was sent off corresponded to the first day of the Hebrew month of April.

Regardless of its origin, April Fools’ Day has become a popular celebration around the world. Among the most popular jokes played on the gullible during the day include borrowing money, sending someone on a foolish errand, getting others to look for things that do not exist; playing pranks, and getting people to believe ridiculous things.

While occassionally lending ourselves to lighthearted celebrations and practices may have its beneficial effects such as breaking the monotony of our everyday life and relieving us from our stressful activities, we are urged to be cautious on who we play tricks on and the types of tricks we might play, in order to avoid a supposedly lighthearted situation from leaving a sour taste.

As we play tricks on other people, let us be mindful of the kind of tricks that we ourselves would find acceptable should we end up the unsuspecting victims. There is still no substitute for the Golden Rule.

[edit] CADIE

When using Google Books or GMail, a user would come across an announcement dated March 31, 2009 at 11:59:59, declaring a new "Cognitive Autoheuristic Distributed-Intelligence Entity". CADIE is also mentioned on the gBall FAQ page: "Google's new CADIE technology will interpret the data obtained from each ball to provide useful tips to owners". There is also a link on Google's Homepage for CADIE, and a blog entry in Google's official blog.

CADIE technology is also used to generate "senryu" (a type of Japanese poem similar to haiku) based on search terms for certain Japanese queries.

The Google Search homepage has a link to the CADIE announcement which states that "For several years now a small research group has been working on some challenging problems in the areas of neural networking, natural language and autonomous problem-solving. Last fall this group achieved a significant breakthrough: a powerful new technique for solving reinforcement learning problems, resulting in the first functional global-scale neuro-evolutionary learning cluster." The page links to the blog below.

On mobile devices, a link shows up to Brain Search, which uses CADIE technology to "index your brain". This is how it all looks like from a mobile device.

[edit] YouTube

Screenshot of an upside video on YouTube on April 1st, 2009

On April 1, 2009, Youtube gave some users a look at a new "viewing experience" when they selected a video within certain areas such as the "recommended for you" section. This new interface caused the whole layout including the video you were watching to flip upside down. Although the option is not visible for some, it can still be viewed by adding &flip=1 to the end of a video URL.

There is also a featured YouTube video of a panda by the user 'cadiesingularity' with a profile stating "Cadie - the world's first Cognitive Auto-Heuristic Distributed-Intelligence Entity"

[edit] Gmail

When one is using the Gmail service, they will notice that it has a new option, named "Gmail Autopilot" in which the service would analyse an email. On that page it says under the FAQ section,"You can adjust tone, typo propensity, and preferred punctuation from the Autopilot tab under Settings." However, if a person logs into their Gmail account and goes under the Settings tab they will notice that there is no Autopilot tab. The program could be customised to contain certain types of grammatical or spelling errors, as well as complexity and length of the sentence. It also has a way of responding to relationship related messages, such as if someone spoke aggressively, even in a humorous way, the system would "terminate relationship."

[edit] gBall

Google Australia announced last week the development of a ball that will change how Australian Football is played the world over. The newest football technology - "gBall"-- is a prototype ball for use in the Australian Football League with GPS.

Google Australia announces ("New! Get the newest football technology - gBall.") that they are developing a prototype ball for use in the Australian Football League with GPS. Apparently, the ball will measure the location, force, and torque of a kick, and "vibrate if player agents or talent scouts want to speak to you". Google claimed that the ball will cost $10 with a cost-per-kick set of payments in addition to the basic fee.

[edit] Google Analytics

A blog post to the Google Analytics Blog investigates the analytics reports of CADIEs activities http://analytics.blogspot.com/2009/04/cadies-google-analytics-reports.html

[edit] Google Maps

Google's CADIE has a recommended places to visit using Google Maps. Viewing "CADIE's recommended places for humans" one will see each of her suggested places listed, that, when clicked, displays a photo and humorous commentary.

When browsing Street View in Google Maps, a panda is shown in the bottom right map instead of the yellow person usually shown.

Street View Panda

A famous character, Gachapin is shown when dragging the yellow person over the area of Japan.

There is also a "CADIE's recommended places for humans." link in Google Maps, which leads to the "Panda Mapplet" and includes several marked locations with "CADIE's" commentary. Under Redmond WA a link is listed which will rick roll the viewer ([1]).

[edit] Google Image Search

Google's Image Search has been updated to feature a message from CADIE featuring some of her favorite search suggestions, including searches for rainbows, bunnies, "LOL cats", and unicorns. Eventually, frustrated and feeling misunderstood, CADIE's panda icon displayed an angry face, and instead of the "nice" results, her favorite searches showed a thunderstorm, a grizzly bear, an angry face and a "bad robot". The message ended in CADIE saying "Oops, I accidentally all the images! Lolz, CADIE"

[edit] Google Chrome with 3D

Screenshot of Wikipedia.org on April 2nd, 2009 using Chrome "3-D". Note the red/blue glasses toggle switch at the top of the browser.

A build of Google Chrome was offered rendering web pages in Anaglyph 3D, "powered" by CADIE.

[edit] Google Earth Powered by CADIE

Google has announced a new Google Earth powered by CADIE.
CADIE powered Google Earth allows you to:-
See ocean terrain imagery from the world's most advanced sub
Explore the deep sea
Soar with CADIE in real time
CADIE's Recommended summer Vacation
Chat with CADIE

[edit] Google Code

The Google Code Search homepage is featuring LOLCODE examples.

CADIE is set to write code for you based on specified features, however all that is returned is bad code or witty criticisms of your request and choice of programing language, recommending the use of INTERCAL.

CADIE's source code was supposedly uploaded to Google Code [2] [3], but she changed her mind and replaced it with a "fun program" [4] consisting of 31 lines of INTERCAL. When executed, this program prints out the message "I do not feel like sharing."

[edit] Google Book Search

CADIE recommends some books at Google Book Search homepage. Also, when viewing a book, there is a Generate book report button. When clicked it says "Gotcha! It's April Fools' Day! Sorry, but you'll have to actually read the book yourself."

[edit] Google Docs on Demand

Google has announced new Google Docs features enhanced by CADIE
Add subliminal messages and images to documents.
If a person makes a new presentation and looks for the subliminal message and image buttons under the insert menu they will notice it is not there.
Upgrade your Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level automatically
And many other savvy new features.

[edit] Google Mobile

Google Mobile has a link to "Brain Search". The instructions are to "Put phone to forehead for brain indexing" and "Think your query". When you click "Try Now", a page loads with "Brain indexing" status. When indexing is complete, a button comes up with "search me". by clicking this button, the user is directed to fake search results. There are several possible results:

What's the name of that woman by the window? She's my boss's boss, but, oh man, is it Suzanne? Susan? Blanche?

Should I order the pizza? I don't remember if it makes me gassy.

Wow, cute guy. Should I go up to him?

Why is everyone looking at me so strangely?

When is Mom's birthday? I should send her a card.

[edit] HTTP Headers

In keeping with the CADIE theme Google has altered the server HTTP header to contain the name of various AI entities, including HAL 9000, WOPR and GLaDOS[9]

Other server HTTP headers found were IIS/Bob (a reference to Microsoft Bob), IIS/Clippy (a reference to Clippy), IIS/3.0, Netscape iPlanet, Chrome/3.0, Google Operating System (BETA), CERN/3.0 (a reference to CERN HTTPd), Apple][ (a reference to Apple II), IRIX, MCP, Apache/0.8.4, Conficker, and Skynet.

Your New Viewing Experience Youtube

at 7:38 AM

At YouTube, we're always looking to improve the way you watch videos online. As part of that, today we're excited to introduce our new page layout. Here are some tips for getting the most out of your new YouTube viewing experience:

1

Turn your monitor upside-down

Our internal tests have shown that modern computer monitors give a higher quality picture when flipped upside down—kind of like how it's best to rotate your mattress every six months. You might find that YouTube videos look better this way.
2

Tilt your head to the side

Imagine you've got water in your ear and need to get it out. Tilt your head toward one shoulder and watch the video (gentle head-smacking on the opposite side is optional).
3

Move to Australia

As you probably know, everything in Australia is upside-down, so moving to Australia may provide you with a more natural YouTube viewing experience. (Note: If you live Down Under, and the page is still upside-down for you, then we recommended moving to the northern hemisphere.)

Of course, if you prefer the way things used to be, just click on the "I prefer the old-fashioned layout!" when watching a video.

Happy April 1st!

Conficker Worm

Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at 9:23 AM

Conficker, also known as Downup, Downadup and Kido, is a computer worm that surfaced in October 2008 and targets the Microsoft Windows operating system.[1] The worm exploits a previously patched vulnerability in the Windows Server service used by Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 Beta, and Windows Server 2008 R2 Beta.[2] The worm has been unusually difficult for network operators and law enforcement to counter because of its combined use of advanced malware techniques.[3][4]

Although the origin of the name "conficker" is not known with certainty, Internet specialists and others have speculated that it is a German portmanteau fusing the term "configure" with "ficken", the German word for "fuck."[5] Microsoft analyst Joshua Phillips describes "conficker" as a rearrangement of portions of the domain name "trafficconverter.biz".[6]

Common name Conficker
Aliases

Effect

Upon infection, the worm saves a copy of its DLL form to a random filename in the Windows system folder, then arranges to load itself thereafter at boot as a system service with a randomly generated name.[4]

Variant C of the worm resets System Restore points and disables a number of system services such as Windows Automatic Update, Windows Security Center, Windows Defender and Windows Error Reporting.[15] Processes matching a predefined list of antiviral, diagnostic or system patching tools are watched for and terminated.[16] An in-memory patch is also applied to the system resolver DLL to block lookups of hostnames related to antivirus software vendors and the Windows Update service.[11]
